'Species' Bend Arts Group Exhibition - Opening Night!

Last night I attended the opening for 'Species' - the very first Bend Arts group exhibition! It was amazing to stroll around, relax and view the artworks on display. I feel extremely proud to have my art pieces exhibited amongst such strong and unique talent! A huge thanks to Hugh Waller, who has been such a key contributor, working hard behind-the-scenes to make it all possible and to every single artist, who of course without their art, the exhibition would not exist!

'Species' - Group Exhibition by Bend Arts Members!

Evolving group exhibition by Bend arts members

I will be contributing artworks to this exhibition, as a proud Bend Arts member!

Although there is no theme for this, our first Bend arts exhibition, the concept is for an evolving/organic exhibition. The idea is that we start with a selection of work, artists are invited to change the work on a fairly regular basis, i.e. remove work and add a new piece or, an artist may choose not put work in at the exhibitions start but include a piece later and so on.  Artists can also add to or change their work during the opening to make it, the opening, even more interesting.

Exhibition dates: Thursday Nov. 24 - Saturday Dec. 31
Location: Allan's Walk Shop 6 (Allan's Walk art space)
Open: 10:00 - 5:00 Thursday, Friday 10:00 -2:00 Saturday

Submission date: no later than Friday, Nov. 18.
Delivery date: Between 4:00 - 5:00pm Monday Nov. 21
or between 11:00am - 1:00pm Tuesday Nov. 22
Set up: Tuesday Nov. 22 / Wednesday Nov. 23

Opening Night: Friday Nov. 25 6:00pm

Collection of artworks: Between 10:00 - 2:00 Saturday Dec. 31

My Contribution @ the A2D Mural: Paste Up Party!

Recently, I got the opportunity to be a participant of a 'Paste Up Party' in Chancery Lane - just outside El Gordo Cafe & Art Space - to create a mural of winning artworks from the recent Analogue: Digital exhibition! Contributing artists included: Me! (Rhayven Jane), Dale Harris, Kara Rice, Reece Hendy & Kelly Robson. Also, Chris Kennett & Alice Fraser made contributions, but were absent on the day, so they had art pasted up on their behalf. Kelly Robson & I did not originally submit work to the A2D exhibition, however, we were lucky enough to be chosen as part of the mural project! I took a few snapshots of my own paste-ups on the day.

The Sketchbook Project 2012!

I am participating in a unique and exciting art opportunity, The Sketchbook Project!
(Most information taken word-for-word from the website for accuracy!)

"Its like a concert tour, but with sketchbooks!"

The Sketchbook Project exhibits thousands of artists' sketchbooks across North America and around the world. We'll be visiting 14 cities in 2012, including our first tour dates in Canada and special exhibitions in London and Melbourne! We're thrilled that the world's largest exhibition of artists' sketchbooks will travel internationally for the first time, thanks to the worldwide response from the Art House community.

All sketchbooks submitted to the 2012 Sketchbook Project will participate in the tour, although the London and Melbourne shows will be limited to books from Europe and Australia, respectively. All books will be exhibited at every North American tour stop. More details and specific locations will be announced soon – stay tuned.

Anyone - from anywhere in the world - can be a part of the project. To participate and have us send you a sketchbook that will go on tour or to browse the 2011 sketchbook entries, visit the site: www.arthousecoop.com Choose a theme for your sketchbook & whether you'd like it digitized (archived professionally online) then it will mailed to you! It's only costs US$25! (+ US$20 if you submit your sketchbook to be digitized).

ENTRIES HAVE NOW CLOSED FOR 2012! But be prepared for The Sketchbook Project 2013!

Just fill the sketchbook pages with art, writing, sketches, ideas, anything and everything creative! Try to avoid materials that might smudge, glitter, peel off, etc. so that your sketchbook is kept in excellent condition and can be read by more people! Also, the cover itself can be decorated however you like!

Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the world. After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.

The Sketchbook Project creates a space to share your process with the world. With new features, new books and a custom-desgined library cataloging system, the 2012 Project is ready for a world tour – all we need is your work.

Your sketchbook will be given a barcode with a unique number – this allows us to keep track of your book and record every time it's viewed at the Brooklyn Art Library and on tour. After we catalog the sketchbook, you'll be able to log in to the Sketchbook Project website and view real-time statistics on your submission for years to come. A passport to the shelves. Every visitor receives a library card to use while browsing the exhibition. As a participating artist, you'll receive email or text messages each and every single time your book is viewed, connecting you and your work to visitors from around the world. Of course, you can turn these notifications on or off at will
.
The Brooklyn Art Library acts as the physical extension of Art House and is home to the Sketchbook Project. Our walls are lined with shelves where we display the sketchbooks and visitors are welcome to check out a pile of books, have a seat at one of our sun-soaked oak tables, and pass an afternoon happily browsing.

The Sketchbook

• 5.25 W x 7.25 H • 100% recycled paper • 70lb text stock • 32 pages
Sketchbookers spoke and we listened! This year, Art House created a custom-designed sketchbook in collaboration with Scout Books featuring a host of improvements and a greener footprint. This year's official Sketchbook Project book is made from high quality 100% recycled paper milled in the Pacific Northwest, printed with vegetable-based inks and produced with renewable energy. We've also improved the weight and texture of the paper, enhanced the strength of the cover and selected wire saddle stitching so that each book is easier to rebind if necessary. We're proud to say that these are the best books we've ever been able to offer for the Sketchbook Project – thanks to feedback from hundreds of members of the Art House community

I am super, SUPER excited that this project is finally happening! Kathleen Hanna is my idol, role model, hero, and generally, the essence of awesome in my view! So when I discovered that a feature length documentary was being produced to tell her story, I think I either jumped up punching the air, or nearly fainted...either way, its going to be freakin' brilliant. The Punk Singer - The Documentary About Kathleen Hanna is directed by film maker Sini Anderson and produced alongside Alan Oxman & Gwen Bialic in Brooklyn, New York. The release date is set for 2012. More updates as they happen!

B-EPIC Birthday Bonfire & BBQ!!

To celebrate our 2nd year of B-EPIC - Bendigo's sexual diversity youth group - we decided to hold a birthday bonfire & barbecue! Adam served up a scrumptious range of food, including tasty japanese pancakes, lovely vegetarian pie, delicious potato salad and homemade plum sauce! Following this mouth-watering feast was a group discussion, where we reminisced about our fondest memories since B-EPIC was formed and what the future holds! After devouring delicious dinosaur-themed cupcakes, we headed down to the waterside where the bonfire was lit and a fiery orange glow illuminated the already beautiful view. Shampas also joined in on the excitement, swimming excitedly in the water, eventually emerging with muddy paws and a goofy grin! And to get dry, played numerous games of fetch amongst the grass! Everyone relaxed and enjoyed themselves, chatting and socialising. We even had some close encounters - with an enormous huntsman spider & two gorgeous baby frogs! It was certainly a memorable and enjoyable evening - I cant wait until next year! These are a few snapshots I took whilst relaxing around the fire. A huge thank you to Adam, Alan, Paula & Sue!!

Suckerpunch - Personal Review

This movie is my new obsession.

Apparently Suckerpunch has been viewed as a film lacking a feminist approach. But I disagree. There is a sense of strength and female empowerment throughout the entire film, some sexual, some physical and some emotional – they are basically in a helpless and seemingly hopeless situation, yet each female character has individual resolve, especially Baby Doll, played by Emily Browning.

Her mind becomes the mechanism she needs to cope with the situations she finds herself in, an aspect of strength in itself. And each layer of the narrative is amplified, the action scenes beautifully visual and complex, every element has a metaphorical connection to the reality of the scenes taking place. This was a wise and strong move by Snyder, as it gives the viewer a much better understanding and perspective of what is involved to overcome the true monsters.

The sexuality of the film have two distinct roles – to show control and to show strength. Each female character identifies the power they have with this aspect of their lives and use it as a driving force to their ultimate goal of escape. Although more of a psychological element, this aspect conveys self awareness. And the fact that the female characters are never shown in garments the mental institution would allow them to wear, instead in the burlesque attire, beautiful hair and makeup gives you the distinct impression that they are strong and in control.

There are so many pieces of this puzzle which makes Suckerpunch a distinctly powerful and intellectual film, taking a story with a fundamentally simple plot into a beautifully woven, intricate film that stimulates every sense and takes the viewer to a whole new level of understanding
